Typography
FK Display
FK Display is our signature font; a single weight sans-serif typeface with a strong personality. FK Display is mainly used for headings and large text.
It’s overall look is particularly expressive due to exaggerated optical compensations, as well as some quirky letterforms; a combination of sharp and rounded corners, subtly reflecting the essence of the brand concept.
FK Display strikes a balance between functionality, distinctiveness, conceptual rigour and skilled workmanship.
Untitled Sans
Our secondary brand font is Untitled Sans. This font we use for body copy, captions, sub-headings and longer texts.
Untitled Sans is a plain neogrotesk sans; clean, unobtrusive and enormously useful. It is straightforward and functional, with a refreshing, crisp aesthetic. Untitled Sans is a pleasure to read in long form texts.
We use Untitled Sans in two weights; Regular for body copy and longer texts, and Medium for sub-headings and caption, or if you need to enhance text in a paragraph.
Hierarchy
We must always communicate clearly and consistlently. Hierarchy is a very important tool for written communication.
When designing it is important to have in mind how people are going to read the text; close up or from a distance. Combining the right font weights, sizes and colours creates layouts that make it easy for the reader to understand the intended message.
Different type of applications can each have their own needs, but we have a few common styles that are widely used.
Headings
For headings we mainly use FK Display creating a clear and strong expression. By using FK Display for headlines we create eye-catching communication that draws the reader in.
Exact sizes are individual to each type of application, relative to it’s format and message, but in general main headings should be set in a large size with a good amount of space around. Line spacing should be approximately 1.2x as large as the size of the text.
When possible, headings should preferably be four times as large as the body copy, but this of course has to be tailored to each individual case.
Sub-headings
Untitled Sans Medium suits well for sub-headings. Sub-headings should be set in the same size as body copy.
Body Copy
For body copy we should always use Untitled Sans. Size is dependent on format but 9pt type on 12pt leading or 14pt on 18pt are examples of good line spacing for printed matter. For larger formats to be read from a distance, body copy should be scaled up in size to ensure good legibility.
Body copy should have generous line spacing, and this is especially important on digital surfaces, where typography is often more fluid. A rule of thumb is that line spacing should be approximately 1.3x as large as the size of the text.
Body copy should be set in black colour on light backgrounds, and white colour on dark backgrounds.
Universal design
All communication and services should be easy to navigate and understand for as many people as possible. Universal design rules should be followed when selecting colours and type sizes. This ensures that all our communication material are accessible to all.
To ensure good readability, all text must have sufficient contrast to its background. In Volue’s communication we should avoid using very small text sizes, or text and backgrounds with low colour contrast. Our colour guidelines provide additional information about validation between the different colours in our palette.
By following the colour and typography guidelines, we will achieve good, legible communication.
System font
Preferably, our brand fonts, FK Display and Untitled Sans, should be used in all communication, but in some cases this is not possible. When our brand fonts aren't available, we have defined Arial as a fallback font. Arial is a system font and should accompany most of today's operating systems.
